New to Pack 6
Pack 6 Pack.JPG

Hello! We are glad you are interested in joining Pack 6.  We are a community of families working together to learn, have fun, and enjoy the outdoors.

The goal of Cub Scouts is to foster teamwork, build confidence, and improve leadership abilities for elementary aged children through a fun and diverse program.

We've created this page to help new families by providing answers to some commonly asked questions about Cub Scouts and Pack 6.  If you have any additional questions that are not answered here, your Scout's Den Leader, the Pack's Cub Master, and the Committee Chairperson, are all available to help.  Welcome to Pack 6 Cranston!

Cub Scouts Pack 6 - Cranston is a member of Scout BSA's Narragansett Council.  Our regularly scheduled meetings are held at 6:30 pm on Tuesday Nights at St. Rocco's Church on the Cranston / Johnston line at 927 Atwood Ave.  Our Pack schedule follows the school schedule for Cranston Public Schools.  Our meetings will typically take place on each Tuesday during the school year when classes are in session.  If there is no school due to a holiday or snow day / school cancellation then Pack 6 does not meet.  You can find the CPS calendar here.  You can see upcoming events on our Pack Calendar on the menu above.

We also hold a variety of special activities throughout the year that typically happen on a weekend.  Family campouts occur in the spring and fall.  We participate in community service projects such as Scouting for Food, litter cleanups, and flag retirement ceremonies.  Our Pack attends group events like Providence Bruins or URI basketball games, Monster Jam, and special "camping trips" such as sleepovers at Battleship Cove and the Boston Museum of Science.  The two biggest indoor events on the annual calendar are the Pinewood Derby and the Blue & Gold Banquet.  We also gather weekly throughout the summer for activities like kite flying, fishing, mini golf, and drive-in movies.

Our Pack welcomes both boys and girls in grades K - 5.  The "Pack" is our entire unit comprised of all grade levels / ranks.  Each grade has it's own specific Den within the Pack and each Scout works with children in their grade on activities and advancement requirements to earn their particular "rank" at the end of each year.  The Den levels are:

  • Kindergarten - Lions

  • 1st Grade - Tigers

  • 2nd Grade - Wolves

  • 3rd Grade - Bears

  • 4th Grade - Webelos I (Stands for "We Be Loyal Scouts")

  • 5th Grade - Webelos II / Arrow of Light (The AoL is the highest award a Cub Scout can earn.)

Scouts work with the other members of their Den to earn adventures, which they display on their uniforms as "belt loops":

Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos (1st - 5th grades) typically meet three times per month as a Den and once per month with the Pack as a whole for awards ceremonies, holiday parties, or other events.

Lions (Kindergartners) typically meet every other week.

Cub Scouting is intended to be a family activity, so parents and siblings of Scouts are always welcome to attend any event or activity!

About Cub Scouts
Cub Scout Akela.png

Cub Scouting is a year-round, family-oriented part of the Boy Scouts of America program designed for elementary school aged boys and girls.  Parents, leaders, and organizations work together to achieve the ten purposes of Cub Scouting:

  • Character Development

  • Fun and Adventure

  • Personal Achievement

  • Good Citizenship

  • Sportsmanship and Fitness

  • Family Understanding

  • Respectful Relationships

  • Friendly Service

  • Spiritual Growth

  • Preparation for Scouting BSA

All the activities Den and Pack leaders plan relate to one or more of these purposes.  Scouts work on a wide range of adventures over their time in Cub Scouts.  Often parents of a Scout may have a job, a skill, or a hobby that helps out their Scout's Den earn a particular adventure.

The CUB SCOUT UNIFORM

Scout Uniform
Cub Scout Uniforms with Lion.jpg

In Cub Scouts there are two different types of uniforms that can be worn; Class A and Class B:

Class A:

  • Class A Uniforms (Pictured Above) are the "formal" uniforms and change as the Scout progresses through Scouting.  For Kindergartners (Lions) the Class A Uniform consists of a Lion T-shirt and Lion hat (and optionally the Lion neckerchief).  For 1st - 3rd Graders (Tiger, Wolf, and Bear Ranks) the Class A Uniform consists of the navy blue dress shirt, blue belt, and rank-specific hat, neckerchief, and neckerchief slide.  For 4th and 5th Graders (Webelos) the Class A Uniform switches to the tan dress shirt, green belt, and Webelos hat, neckerchief and neckerchief slide, which the Scouts will continue wearing if they move on to Scouts BSA when they graduate to middle school.

Class A Uniforms are worn during Pack meetings, advancement ceremonies, the Blue & Gold Banquet, Pinewood Derby, or any other formal gathering.

Families are responsible for purchasing the shirt, belt, and hat for their Scout.  Pack 6 provides the neckerchief and neckerchief slide for Scouts when they earn a rank and advance to the next rank.  Class A Uniforms and rank-specific items can be purchased from the West Bay Scout Shop.

Class B:

  • Class B Uniforms are the "informal" uniforms of the Pack.  They consist of a Pack 6 T-shirt or sweatshirt.  The Class B uniforms are worn for any Den or Pack activity (along with the rank-specific hat) when the Class A Uniform isn't required.

The Pack provides a Class B T-shirt once a new scout has paid their annual dues.  A Class B sweatshirt can be purchased  from the Pack if desired.

Either the Class A or Class B uniform should be worn to all Cub Scouting activities with Pack 6.

ADVANCEMENT

Advancement
Cub-Scout-ranks-5.png

When a boy or girl becomes a Cub Scout, they join a Den along with other children in their grade to work towards earning the rank for that grade.  Before earning any rank ALL Scouts must first earn the Bobcat award.  The Bobcat badge covers Scouting fundamentals, including learning the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, Salute, Sign, and Handshake.

After earning the Bobcat, a Scout will work with their Den and the Pack as a whole to complete the requirements for their rank.  At the end of each school year, if a Scout has completed all of their requirements they will be awarded with a patch for that rank.  Even if a Scout doesn't complete the requirements to be awarded that rank, they will move forward with their Den the following year and begin working towards the next rank.  Our meeting schedule helps to ensure that each Pack 6 Scout can earn their rank by the end of the school year with normal participation.

In 4th and 5th grade, Scouts become Webelos (which stands for "We Be Loyal Scouts") as they progress towards the transition from Cub Scouts to Scouts BSA in middle and high school.

The highest award a Cub Scout can earn is the Arrow of Light.  It is the final achievement of the two years working on the Webelos rank, just before a Scout crosses over to Scouts BSA.  The Arrow of Light award stays with its recipient for the rest of their years in Scouting and is even recognized with a special patch on an adult Scouting leader's uniform.  To celebrate a Cub Scout's attainment of the Arrow of Light award the Pack has a special ceremony honoring all of the work they put into it.  Shortly thereafter, the Pack holds a "Crossing Over" ceremony where the AoL recipients cross over a bridge representing their journey through Cub Scouts and select a Scout Troop to join if they decide to move forward with Scouting into the middle school and high school years.
